Cover page of today's newspaper Politika with the article on Turkish coupIn the past 21 months in Turkey, nearly 9.000 magistrates (out of around 15.000) who dared to protect basic rights and freedoms and to adjudicate in accordance to the law and their own conscience, even in the politically sensitive cases, thus including those affecting the family or the Turkish president himself, have been transferred in the areas thousands of kilometres away from their permanent residences. Many of the magistrates had been separated from their children and spouses, who remained employed in the cities they lived together until that moment. In June 1985, a group of European magistrates  - judges and prosecutors - founded MEDEL - Magistrats Européens pour la Démocratie et les Libertés, based on the strong belief that a united Europe could not be limited to free markets, but had to be based on fundamental rights and the Rule of Law in democratic societies.

Kathe Kollwitz The Lisbon Treaty has established a zone of justice, freedom and security between the European Union country members, which are required to honour the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

By publishing the Stockholm Programme for an area of freedom, security and justice at the service of its citizens in 2009, The European Union set before itself an ambitious task.

Justice has to be a force for democracy, effective both for the promotion of citizens’ rights and for the prevention of crime and corruption.
